This cycling tour starts in the village of Staševica, located just 15 minutes from the towns of Ploče and Vrgorac. Situated on the very edges of the “Jezero” field, this area is ideal for cycling tours. The field was once a large lake, which became fertile land after the construction of a drainage tunnel.

Tour Information:

After a brief introduction from our guide, the tour begins towards the “Maričevac” drainage tunnel, which was built between the two world wars, between 1936 and 1938. This tunnel connects the “Jezero” field with the Baćinska Lakes, also known as the “Pearls of Queen Teuta”. The tunnel is 2,138 meters long, with a cross-section of 7.44 square meters, a 7.56% incline, and a water flow capacity of 30 cubic meters per second.

The route to the tunnel is about 10 km long, mainly on gravel roads, passing through vineyards and orchards while following the course of the Matica River. Along the way, we will pass by a river dam and through a small canyon before riding along the riverbed, which dries up in summer, leading us directly to the drainage tunnel.

A short break follows, along with time for photos and information about the tunnel. Before entering, it is recommended to wear warm clothing (a jacket or a long-sleeve shirt), as the tunnel is significantly colder and damp. The tunnel floor is concreted, but there are some puddles and soil patches. Inside, you can see traces of manual construction, and in the middle of the tunnel, there is a narrow passage where material was once extracted to the surface.

After passing through the tunnel, we arrive at Baćinska Lakes, where there is a small local beach and park. Here, we take a break to refresh with some local food and drinks. Afterward, we continue exploring the lakes, enjoying the stunning natural beauty of this cryptodepression. There is also an option to stop at a lakeside beach bar or visit the town of Ploče.
